EDAM CHEESE AND ZAANSER WINDMILLS
One of the world’s most famous cheeses is home just north of Lelystad: Edam cheese. During this excursion, you will visit the Kaasmarkt (cheese market) in Edam. A highlight is the old cheese scale with its weights. In 1573 Wilhelm von Oranien presented the city of Edam, due to its courage and merit during the Siege of Alkmaar, with right of scales. You will continue on to Zaanse Schans – an open-air museum, which gives you insight into Holland in the 17th and 18th century. Walk past authentic houses, a historic shipyard, windmills, a pewter factory, a cheese and dairy farm and much more.

BIKE TOUR THROUGH ANTWERP
Experience the unique atmosphere of Antwerp – the cosmopolitan city of diamonds and Rubens. It offers a variety of attractions, such as town hall which was designed in the Renaissance style. The bike ride takes you through the impressive Art Nouveau district and the Scheldt. Of course, you will also cycle through the famous diamond district! Antwerp can be explored best by bicycle. From the observation deck of the museum "MAS Museum aan de Strom" you will overlook the whole city.

ANTWERP’S HIGHLIGHTS
Antwerp is not only known for being Europe's third-largest port. It is also the most important city in the world when it comes to diamonds – with most of the world’s diamonds traded here. A short bus tour takes you to Het Steen, a medieval fortress which is the oldest preserved building in the city, and to the historic Antwerp-Centraal train station, which is considered as the world’s fourth greatest train station. Afterwards, you will take a stroll through the historic centre with
the “Grote Markt” and the lavishly decorated Renaissance town hall. You will feel tiny in front of the beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal), which extends far into the sky. You will reach the romantic Franconian metropolis in just a few minutes by bus from the berth, which is located a little distance outside of the city. The southernmost cycling tour along the Rhine takes you through one of the most beautiful regions of Europe, the tri-border area of Switzerland, Germany and France. MEDIEVAL BERNKASTEL-KUES
Bernkastel-Kues has been blessed twice: once with fertile vineyards and once by the perhaps most unique ensemble of medieval half-timbered buildings. Especially famous for the “Spitzhäuschen”, which has been balancing on a foundation that appears to be much too narrow since 1416. It is a true wonder that it has not fallen over yet! The Renaissance city hall, built in 1608, and the Michaela fountain in the market square are just as remarkable as the parish church of St. Michael with its more than 600-year-old tower down by the river bank.

BREISACH
 

FREIBURG
Architectural treasures in the midst of a unique mountain landscape - Freiburg is a true delight for the eyes. After about a half hour drive, you will reach the capital of the southern Black Forest. From a distance you can see the world-famous Freiburg Minster towering in the sky. After its completion in the middle of the 16th century, this masterpiece of Gothic architecture was one of the tallest religious buildings in the world. Much smaller, but no less impressive, is the historical merchants’ hall from the 16th century with its dominant red façade. After touring around the old city with its famous “Bächle” channels, you will have plenty of time to explore the city centre on your own before you return to Breisach.

COLMAR
Idyllically located on the Alsace wine road, Colmar can boast of being the capital of local wines. In addition, the city impresses with an architectural heritage of over six centuries. The tour takes you through the old town with its magnificent buildings and picturesque neighbourhoods like “Little Venice” and the Tanners’ Quarter. Then you can explore the city individually before heading back to Breisach.

BIKE TOUR THROUGH THE MOSELLE VALLEY AND TO COCHEM
On your bike, you can explore one of the most beautiful stretches along the Moselle, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine in a sweeping bend. It is flanked by steep slopes, where the grapes mature for great wines. From the ship, you will cycle to Bruttig-Fankel and onwards across the river directly into the picturesque streets of Cochem. During a stop at the historic mustard mill, you will have the chance to taste some of the “spicy gold”. Then you will continue to the late-Gothic Cochem Castle, situated on the largest castle hill along the Moselle, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view over the river.

CITY WALK AROUND COCHEM AND VISIT TO THE REICHSBURG
The second smallest county seat in Germany is one of the most beautiful cities in the Moselle Valley. Cochem’s long history is revealed during a tour of the old town. You walk past the Capuchin monastery, the parish church of St. Martin and the town hall from the 17th century. Mini busses will take you up 100 meters to the imperial castle, which is one of the most beautiful castles in the region. The tour takes you through the neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque designed rooms with valuable furnishings. Please note that the excursion might be conducted in reverse order. There may be some waiting time before boarding the minibuses.

Duisburg has a lot to offer: In the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord extending over an area of about 180 hectares, nature, industrial heritage and a fascinating light installation combine to create a park landscape unlike any other in the world. At the centre stands a disused ironworks whose old industrial facilities have today been put to a wide variety of uses. The history of the ironworks, its technology and the former working conditions are presented professionally and vividly. Follow the route of the iron through the blast furnace and experience the new use of the metallurgical plant as a living cultural space.

The skyline, its old Town, apple cider - Frankfurt does not fit into any one category. And that's great, because contrasts are exciting. Here you will stroll through the old town with the baroque Sint-Baafskathedraal (St Bavo's Cathedral), the imposing Gravensteen castle from around 807 and the almost 100-metertall bell tower, the Belfort. After the tour, you have some free time to explore the city individually before returning your cruise ship.

PICTURESQUE BRUGES
If there is a city that can claim to be Belgium’s most beautiful, then this is most definitely Bruges. Steeped in tradition, Bruges has almost completely retained its medieval glory. During the 12th and 13th century, Bruges became one of the most important commercial cities in the world. Major sights include the old market square, with its beautiful buildings, and the Heilig-Bloedbasiliek. After an extensive tour, you will have enough time to explore Bruges on your own – the various chocolates and pralines, for which Bruges is famous, are definitely worth experiencing. This merchant settlement was established in the 14th century, and was at the height of its glory in the 16th century. Back then it was considered to be one of the most important harbour cities on the Zuidersee – this is evidenced by numerous buildings and monuments that still exist today. The most famous inhabitant was the seafarer Willem Schouten, who sailed around the southern tip of America in 1616, and named it after his home town – Cape Hoorn. Another famous man from Hoorn was Abel Janszoon Tasman, who was the first European to visit both New Zealand and Tasmania. During the tour, you will be able to see the picturesque harbour, the Grote Kerk, the Oude Stadhuis, the Waag at Rhode Steen, and much more. Delve into Hoorn’s interesting and fascinating history.

CITY WALK THROUGH HISTORIC MAINZ
The cheerful Carnival City of Mainz has a long history. Our excursion takes you to the historic treasures, such as St. Martin’s Cathedral. Built in the 10th century, it is Mainz’s landmark and impresses visitors with its opulent interior. The tour then takes you to the former Holy Spirit Hospital from the 13th century and to the Old University. It was built as a Jesuit College between 1615 and 1618 and still houses various institutes today. Johannes Gutenberg, one of Mainz’s most famous sons, invented the printing press in the 15th century. Experience the history of printing, books and writing up-close in the Gutenberg-Museum, where you can also see two original Gutenberg Bibles.

HANSEATIC CITY NIJMEGEN
The Hanseatic city of Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Its history goes back to Roman times. Later, the city repeatedly became the imperial residence (during the Carolingian period), as well as a part of the Hanseatic League. In 1678, the Treaty of Peace of Nijmegen between France and the Netherland was signed here. The central old town is especially worth a visit today. You will explore the old town during this guided city walk, where you will also see the St. Stevenskerk, the Belvedère, the Latijnse School and the Grote Markt.

NUREMBERG, CAPITAL OF FRANCONIA
The second largest city in Bavaria is definitely worth a visit. The landmark of Nuremberg - the Imperial Castle - is located high above the city and influences the cityscape with its striking appearance. The castle, in which all the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire temporarily resided between 1050 and 1571, is one of the most important imperial castles of the Middle Ages. First, you will take the bus to the centre of Nuremberg. The old town has retained its character despite widespread destruction during the Second World War. During a walking tour, you will see the medieval city walls - one of the most important fortifications in Europe - the St. Lawrence and St. Sebald Church and many more sights. The "Little Town at the King’s Gate" offers traditional craftsmanship and Franconian hospitality with a charming backdrop.

REGENSBURG
 

CITY WALKING TOUR OF REGENSBURG
Located at the northernmost point of the Danube, Regensburg is the city where many of the buildings still reflect the major political, economic and religious developments of the Middle Ages. The magnificent trading houses, many of them characterised by patrician tower houses, are a great example. The wealthy patrician families donated huge church buildings - the construction of Regenburg’s cathedral is unique compared to anywhere else east of the Rhine! But Regensburg is much older: The Porta Praetoria is considered to be one of the oldest preserved buildings – being almost 2,000 years old. Therefore the Porta Praetoria is - together with the Porta Nigra - one of the only two remaining Roman gate systems north of the Alps.

ROTTERDAM
 

BIKE TOUR THROUGH ROTTERDAM
Rotterdam is home to Europe’s largest seaport. But with a university, a technical college, a music college and an art academy, the city is also one of the cultural centres of the Netherlands. You will cycle past the old clinker-houses of the suburbs and past charming houses, to the world famous Cube Houses and through the "De Kralingse Bos" park with its popular lake. The modern architecture of the new city is also impressive. During your tour, you will also see the gigantic Erasmus Bridge, the Art Hall and the Schouwburgplein.

THE HAGUE AND DELFT
Only around 30 kilometres from Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ third largest city – the Hague. Capital of the province Zuid-Holland, it is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament, as well as home to the Dutch royal family. The excursion first takes you to the “Binnenhof”, the impressive main square which dominates the historic city centre. This large rectangular courtyard is surrounded by stately buildings and was the starting point of urban development in the 13th
century. In the 17th century, it was considered the centre of European diplomacy and today it is the seat of the Dutch Parliament. Northeast of the square there is the Royal Palace and official  residence of the Queen. Behind that you will find the Vredespaleis (Palace of Peace), home to the International Court of Justice. Then continue to Delft, famous for the porcelain "Delfts Blauw" and for its painter Johannes Vermeer. Here you have time for a leisurely walk along the canals, churches, mansions and beautiful courtyards.

ROTTERDAM - ARCHITECTURE AND MODERNITY
Rotterdam has a long history. On the outside, however, the city is refreshingly modern. Rotterdam is the most important architectural city in the Netherlands - an impressive skyline has developed over the past 20 years. The Witte Huis with its height of 46 meters was the first skyscraper in Europe. Very unique are the famous Cube Houses. Of course, you also visit the extraordinary market hall in the form of a huge aircraft hangar. The walls and ceiling of the market hall are decorated with 11,000 square meters of huge colourful panels picturing fruit and vegetables. The unique feature of this market is the sustainable combination of food, leisure, living and parking.

RÜDESHEIM
 

“WINZEREXPRESS” AND CABLE CAR: NIEDERWALD MONUMENT AND THE HISTORIC CENTRE
The “Winzerexpress” (small tourist train) takes you directly from the berth to the cable car. The panoramic views over Rüdesheim's historic centre and the Rhine make the smooth glide over the vineyards a very special experience. Upon arrival, you will see the 38-meter-tall Niederwald monument, which recalls the unification of Germany in 1871. The central figure is the 10.5 metre tall Germania figure, which holds the recovered crown of the emperor in its right hand and the Imperial Sword in the left. Afterwards, take a stroll through the historic centre of Rüdesheim, including the famous Drosselgasse. You will find many wine bars and garden taverns in this 144 metre long alley.

RÜDESHEIM IN CHRISTMAS SPLENDOUR
Just before Christmas, the city of Rüdesheim glitters in matchless splendour. Come with us and stroll along the atmospheric Christmas market to the largest nativity scene in Germany and try the local mulled wine. During the guided tour, you will also experience the marketplace, the Oberstraße, the world-famous Drosselgasse and the Rhine promenade. And if you do not want to return to your A-ROSA cruise ship just yet, you can simply stay in the old town and enjoy the peaceful bustle.

In the footsteps of the Romans, you will then explore the amphitheatre, the ruins of Barbara thermal baths, as well as the throne room of Emperor Constantine the Great. We will then pass the Palace of the Electorate from the 18th century before reaching the city's main landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Porta Nigra.

Our berth in Wertheim is located only a few minutes’ walk away from the centre of the medieval town of Wertheim. Once 18 city gates served as the entrée and you will enter the town through one of these historic city gates before strolling over the market square and admiring the Angel Fountain and the Protestant Collegiate Church and finally arriving at the glass museum. Here you will learn many interesting facts about the production and the use of glass from antiquity to modern times. One of the glassblowers will also demonstrate the art of glass blowing.

WÜRZBURG
 

MARIENBERG FORTRESS AND WÜRZBURG’S OLD TOWN
During this excursion you will first discover the old town during a city walk. Afterwards a bus will take you up to the Marienberg Fortress, the widely visible and prominent landmark of Würzburg. Originally, the fortress served as a Celtic refuge castle which was built around 704. Later, the first church of Würzburg was built here and in the early 13th century the first fortified castle was added, which was rebuilt several times during the Renaissance and Baroque time.
