ARLES
 

A-ROSA BIKE TOUR THROUGH THE WILD CAMARGUE
Quaint villages, white wild horses and pink flamingos - that is the Camargue. Explore the untouched flood plain in the saddle of your A-ROSA bicycle. You will cycle past vast rice fields and the famous Camargue bulls - the meat is a real delicacy - until arriving in Étang de Vaccarès. With a little luck, we will see some flamingos here at the salt water lagoon. The next stop is Arles, which is a well-known thanks to Van Gogh's masterpieces. During a coffee break, you can admire the imposing amphitheatre of the Roman period.

THE CAMARGUE - A WONDER OF NATURE
Where land and sea merge, something wonderful is created. The Camargue is a natural wonder. And you will experience it first hand - with its flocks of flamingos and the famous white horses, the fauna is truly unique. Today, the free-roaming white Camargue horses and Camargue cattle are no wild animals anymore, but are kept on wide pastures that are typical for the region. We will continue to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a major pilgrimage site and a touristic centre of the Camargue. The "Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer" church from the 9th century houses sacred relics of Marie Saloné and Marie Jacobé. Since 1448, a pilgrimage to the church is held twice per year. The centre of veneration of Saint Sarah, also known as Sara the Black, is also here in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a place of pilgrimage for Roma. After a short walk you will have some free time.

JEEP TOUR THROUGH THE CAMARGUE
The Camargue is one of the last areas along the Mediterranean coast, where you can find unspoilt nature. It is an Eldorado for nature and freedom lovers. Once you leave the main roads during your jeep tour, a wonderful adventure will begin. See the famous white wild horses from up close and enjoy the endless vastness. In case of bad weather, a bus transfers you to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where your jeep tour begins.

CITY WALK ARLES
The former seat of government of Friedrich Barbarossa is – together with Marseille – one of the oldest towns in France. As well, Arles is associated with Vincent Van Gogh. The stay in Arles was one of his most effective phases for paintings and drawings: he created more than works of art 300 within 15 months. Although none of his art works are displayed in Arles, Van Gogh’s spirit is all over. Retrace the steps of former times and enjoy the present at the same time. A visit to the
amphitheatre should not be missed.

NICE - THE CAPITAL OF THE CÔTE D’AZUR
Nice, wonderfully located on the Côte d´Azur, has much to offer. You can find a large marina, see numerous exclusive hotels and experience the vibrant lifestyle of the locals. Nice has the warmest and most stable climate on the Côte d´Azur. In the 19th century, the city was a popular winter location for British and Russian citizens, and has even been home to the Russian tsar family during the winter months. Numerous magnificent buildings, including an Orthodox cathedral, still exist. Today, Nice is a lively tourist centre. The French way of life, excellent cuisine and a wonderful climate makes the city a coveted holiday destination. The promenade
"Promenade des Anglais" owes its name to the English. After a round trip through this bustling harbour town, you will have time to enjoy a cup of coffee in the old town or in one of the famous hotels before you return to your cruise ship.

BIKING TOUR THROUGH AVIGNON IN THE MORNING
In the morning Avignon is still wonderfully quiet. The perfect time to explore the city and its exciting history by bike. After witnessing the sun rise over the Rhône, you will explore the overwhelming Pope's Palace and many other sights. The relocation of the Pope's seat to Avignon in the 14th century also provided the city with gothic churches, monasteries and other splendid buildings. The morning light also adorns the small island Barthelasse with a fantastic atmosphere. Here, you will cycle through lush nature inside and outside of the city.

AVIGNON CITY WALKING TOUR WITH A VISIT TO THE POPES PALACE
Through small alleys and past the numerous small city palaces, chapels and churches, this excursion will lead you to the famous Palais du Pape, which can be explored during an extensive tour. In the beginning of the 14th century Pope Clemens V settled here, followed by further popes and cardinals. The visit of this fortified site takes you to the great halls, to the chapels, to the terrace with magnificent views of Avignon and the Rhône and even to the private chambers of the Pope. Each year in June, the one of the largest theatre festivals in the world takes place around the principal and most impressive land-mark of the whole Provence. For about four weeks, the streets of Avignon turn into a colourful market of creativity. You pass the church of St. Agricol, continue your walk to the viewing point of Rocher des Domes, from where you can enjoy an excellent panoramic view of the Rhône Valley and the famous Pont d’Avignon.

PONT DU GARD AND UZÈS
The Rhône tributary Gardon is mostly unknown, but the structure that crosses it is world famous: the perfectly preserved Pont du Gard is regarded as one of antiquity’s architectural masterpieces. This three level Roman aqueduct is 275 m long and, while in use over 2000 years ago, transported 20,000 m³ of water per day! Thus providing wide areas of southern Roman provinces with water. On the return to your A-ROSA cruise ship, you will stop in the picturesque town of Uzès to see its narrow alleys and charming plazas.

CYCLING ALONG THE CHEMIN VERT
From Chalon-sur-Saône it is only few kilometres to Chemin Vert, which is one of the most beautiful bicycle tracks of France. Drive along Canal du Centre through the fascinating landscapes of famous vineyards. In or close to Chagny, we will stop for a coffee break before cycling back to Chalon.

BIKE TOUR THROUGH THE BURGUNDY TO TOURNUS
While your A-ROSA cruise ship will be cruising from Chalon-sur-Saône to Tournus, you may do the same route by bike. From Chalon you will take the south route and pass through Varennes, Marnay and Gigny until you will reach Tournus. A tour without steep ascending slopes, which is suitable for everyone.

BEST BURGUNDY IN BEAUNE
Undoubtedly, some of the world’s best wines originate from the region of Burgundy, especially the well-known Chardonnay (white wine) and Pinot noir (red wine) grapes. On your way to Beaune, you will pass some of the most famous wine cities of the Côte d’Or, such as Pommard and Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny. In Beaune you will visit the Hôtel-Dieu. This masterpiece of Flemish gothic accommodated its first patients in the mid of the 15th century. Today, the museum offers rare views back into the nursing practices of early modern age. After visiting the museum you will have time to discover the picturesque old town on your own.

CYCLING TOUR THROUGH LYON
Would you like to experience Lyon’s hustle and bustle? Then get on the saddle and cycle through Lyon! A highlight of this refreshing tour is a stop at the market halls "Les Halles", where fresh produce and products for fine Lyon cuisine are on display. Let your eyes wander over the huge Place Bellecour and watch the ever-hungry pigeons. Finally, you will have a view over the whole city from Fourvière Hill.

CITY TOUR OF LYON

Have a look at the houses built in Italian Renaissance style, the Roman theatre and the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. LYON BY NIGHT
After sundown, two hundred of Lyon’s sights, bridges and monuments are accentuated using special illumination, lending the city of Lyon an entirely new dimension. CLUNY CLOISTER
Today one can hardly imagine that about 1,000 years ago Cluny was the religious centre of Europe. Until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome was finished, the cloister of Cluny III was the largest church in Christianity. Visit the remains of the five naves of this stunning church and discover the fascinating way of life of the monks, up to 10,000 of which lived in the cloister of Cluny during the Middle Ages.

CITY WALK VIENNE
Let´s go to Gaul! Founded by Julius Caesar over 2,000 years ago, Vienne became the second capital of southern Gaul during the Roman Empire, and temporary imperial residence. Numerous monuments such as the Temple of Augustus and Livia, the garden of the Cybele and an antique theatre are still witnesses to the richness of this period. Also worth a visit are the opposite located Tour des Valois with its Romanesque-Gothic Saint-Maurice cathedral with a huge Flamboyant window. From the 4th century until the end of the 18th century it was the seat of the archbishop.

VIVIERS / LA VOULTE
BIKE TOUR DE VIVIERS
The Rhône crosses the landscape like a dark green ribbon. And you will cycle along the bank, beginning in Viviers. First you will pass by the foot of a local mountain and cycle through the pretty town of Donzère. Then it becomes a bit more demanding: you will cycle on a former route of the Tour de France with a longer climb. Your guide will adjust speed to ensure that everyone can keep up. And the effort is definitely worth it: the magnificent descent back to Viviers takes you past Châteauneuf-du-Rhône.

SOUTHERN ARDÈCHE AND LAVENDER SCENT
Over the course of millions of years, the typical limestone of the Ardèche formed one of the most beautiful landscapes in Southern France. Along the river you will drive to one of the numerous grottos of the area, such as the Grottes des Madeleines, which consists of more than 25 subterranean halls, or the Grotte Chauvet, which houses the oldest cave paintings in the world. Continuing your trip to one of the lavender producers in the Ardèche-area, you will be shown the different types and species of lavender, as well as their usage in medicine, decoration and perfume production. Finally, you return to your A-ROSA cruise ship.
