The Roman history is still tangible here and there, the medieval town lovingly maintained, Mainz has developed into a modern university and media city. But on this New Year's route, of course, even more cities inspire with unique sights. The best way to recover from the breathtaking Strasbourg Cathedral is in the picturesque district of "La Petite France" with a local white wine by the small rippling canals. Then to Frankfurt, and on the way back, a visit to Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. Still thinking about Cologne?
